Like many tarot readers, I’m more than a little obsessed with the 78 cards. Tarot plays a huge role in my life. There aren’t many days that I don’t pick up my cards. Since I read the tarot for myself and for my clients, it’s not only a personal practice but also my profession. And, my home is bursting at the seams with tarot decks.
Still, there have been times during the twenty plus years of working with the cards that I’ve taken breaks. This may also happen to you too. You may find that there are times you don’t feel the pull to pick up your cards and work with them. It’s normal and totally fine.
Modern life is busy. There is nothing wrong with making sure that you are taking care of your responsibilities. Career, family, home, and the people that you care about (and rely on you) are important for living a good life.
You are going to get sick at some point. Or, you might be mentally or spiritually exhausted. Sometimes you just need a break.
While there are tarot practices that can assist with your healing, you should feel no shame if you don’t feel called to use them. Many of us don’t even realize that we are tapped dry until it’s too late. Give yourself the gift of deep rest and being gentle with yourself during these times, there is no need to pressure yourself to use tarot.
There are also times in life when you are inspired to work with something else for a while. That’s ok. Don’t let social media filters or other people opinions make you feel inadequate or like you aren’t being spiritual.
Spiritual Shaming Is Bullshit
People are always going to share the best of themselves and stuff that will get a lot of likes on their Instagram accounts. Pretty pictures and likes aren’t’ what makes you a spiritual person. Spiritual quotes on social media accounts aren’t what makes you a spiritual person. You choose your spiritual practice, however, it looks.
If you choose to work with a different cartomancy system like the Lenormand or Kipper cards, or you pick up the runes for a while, this all adds to your spiritual path and your knowledge about the world and yourself.
At the end of the day, you can bring your spirituality into anything you do (that’s really what’s important). It doesn’t have to fit anyone else’s mould.
Spiritually shaming someone is a shitty thing to do.
If anyone tries to make you feel bad about your current spiritual journey (whether it’s tarot, yoga, witchcraft, or anything else) isn’t worth your time or energy. That’s their shit, not yours. Leave them to their crappy vibes and move forward.
4 Ideas To Help You Get Back Into Tarot After A Break
When you feel you are ready to pick up the cards again it can be helpful to keep it simple and focus on one thing at a time. Here are some ideas for you.
1. Enjoy Your Collection
I love getting my decks out and looking through them once in a while. It is so nice to look through the cards (they are like miniature art galleries after all) and remember some of your favorite decks.
A lot of us are always on the lookout for a new deck but it is just as important to enjoy the ones you have and get reacquainted with old tarot friends.
2. New Tarot Deck Vibes
Working with a new Tarot deck, especially a deck that has different imagery than you are used to, can help jumpstart your intuition and spark learning of new aspects of the Tarot.
3. Find Your Fellow Tarot People
Go to an in-person Tarot meetup in your local city. There are Tarot meetups all over the world and meeting new people that love the tarot is a great way to make friends. It’s also great to talk about the Tarot with a group of people who are into it as much as you are.
4. Join a Tarot Social Media Challenge
There are Tarot social media challenges everywhere online. Instagram has great photo challenges. Youtube has awesome video challenges. There are tons in Facebook Groups.
If you do participate, remember to be gentle with yourself if you don’t complete the challenge or you miss a day or two. Remember give yourself grace, hot stuff!
Self Care And Boundaries are Pillars of Spiritual Practice
Both are just as important as working with your spiritual tools. You are enough. Your tarot practice is enough.
Your work with the Tarot will change and evolve as you do. You don’t have to use the cards every day. Having a break will allow for new experiences and a renewed perspective which only adds to your tarot practice.
Your decks will always be there for you to come back to if you take a break.
